The honest answer to "TRC20 or BEP20?" is: use whichever network your USDT is already sitting on. Both settle in about a minute, both are supported at checkout, and the difference in on-chain fee between them is usually smaller than what you would lose swapping or bridging to reach the "cheaper" one.
The reason that answer disappoints people is that the fee everyone argues about is not the fee they actually pay. If your USDT is on an exchange, the withdrawal charge — a flat $1 to $2.50 depending on the platform — is set by the exchange, not the blockchain, and it dwarfs the real network cost. Choosing a network to save eight cents while paying a $2.40 withdrawal fee is optimising the wrong number.

Notice how neither column is simply cheaper. TRC20's cost is close to free if you have prepared your account and noticeably expensive if you have not. BEP20's cost is low and roughly the same for everybody. That structural difference matters more than the headline number.

TRON's energy and bandwidth model, in plain terms
TRON does not charge gas the way most chains do. It meters two separate resources. Bandwidth covers the raw size of your transaction, and every TRON account gets 600 bandwidth points free each day. Energy covers computation, and a USDT transfer is a smart contract call, so it needs a lot of it.
A standard USDT TRC20 transfer consumes roughly 345 bandwidth and around 65,000 energy. The free daily bandwidth covers the first part; nothing covers the energy unless you have arranged it. If you have not, TRON burns TRX to make up the shortfall — about 13.4 TRX for a transfer to an address that does not already hold USDT.
There are two ways to avoid that burn. You can stake TRX to generate energy: roughly 5,000 TRX staked produces enough daily energy for one or two USDT transfers indefinitely, and the stake is recoverable after a 14-day unstaking period. BNB Smart Chain after the Fermi upgrade
BSC has spent the last two years getting faster. The Maxwell hardfork in 2025 cut block time from 1.5 seconds to 0.75, and the Fermi hardfork — activated on mainnet on 14 January 2026 — brought it down again to 0.45 seconds, alongside stronger fast-finality rules.
For a payment, sub-second blocks mean the confirmation wait is dominated by how many blocks the recipient waits for, not by the chain itself. Gas prices on BSC have stayed in the fractions-of-a-gwei range, which is why a USDT transfer there generally lands in the cents rather than the dollars. The one thing you must hold is a small amount of BNB for gas — USDT alone will not move, and this is the most common reason a BEP20 transfer fails to send.

The fee that actually decides this

The mistake that costs real money
Crypto checkouts match payments by amount, and most exchanges deduct the withdrawal fee from the amount you type rather than adding it on top. Enter the invoice figure exactly and the payment arrives short by the fee — which means it does not match, and the order sits unpaid until support reconciles it manually.
The fix is mechanical. Before you confirm a withdrawal, look at the "you will receive" line, not the amount field. If it reads less than the invoice, increase the amount field until the receive line matches.
