The single most common support ticket in the gift card world is not fraud, and it is not late delivery. It is a perfectly genuine code that will not redeem — because it belongs to the wrong region. I have redeemed codes on four continents, and I have also personally donated about $40 to the region-lock gods over the years. This guide is everything I wish someone had told me first.
What a region lock actually is
When a store issues a gift card, the code is registered against one country or currency zone in the issuer's system. Redemption then checks at least one of three things:
- Your account's registered country — the one you picked when you created the account, not where you are sitting today.
- The currency of your wallet — a USD Steam wallet cannot accept a code denominated in Turkish lira.
- Occasionally, your payment or IP history — some platforms flag accounts that hop regions too often.
The lock lives on the issuer's side, so no VPN, workaround or goodwill email reliably beats it. The fix is always the same: buy the code that matches your account, not your location.
The 60-second check before you buy
Do this once per platform and you will never buy a dead code again:
- Steam: open Account details — the country and wallet currency are printed at the top. That currency is the card you buy.
- PlayStation: Settings → Users and Accounts → Account → the country shown there is fixed at signup and cannot be changed. Buy PSN cards for that country only.
- App Store / iTunes: Settings → your name → Media & Purchases — the storefront country decides. US cards for US Apple IDs, UAE cards for UAE IDs.
- Google Play: your Play country updates at most once a year, so treat it as fixed. Check it in Play Store → Settings → General → Account preferences.
Global cards exist — and they are underrated
Some products skip the problem entirely. Cards labelled Global (many Razer Gold, Steam Wallet in USD for supported regions, most game top-ups done by player ID) redeem across most account countries. When you top up a game directly through your player ID — the way game top-ups work — there is no code and no region lock at all: the credit lands inside the game account regardless of where you play from. If you routinely juggle regions, ID-based top-ups are the least painful option.
Common region-lock myths
"A VPN fixes it." It does not. The lock checks your account's registered country, not your IP. A VPN at redemption time changes nothing except, occasionally, adding a fraud flag.
"Support will convert the code." Issuers almost never exchange a code across regions, because the card was sold into a specific market at a specific price. Assume the answer is no.
"EUR cards work anywhere in Europe." Mostly true inside the eurozone, but Poland, Czechia, Hungary and the UK all run their own currencies and their own cards. Check the currency, not the continent.
What to do if you already bought the wrong region
- Do not redeem it — a failed redemption attempt is harmless, but a successful redemption into a throwaway account kills any resale value.
- Resell or gift it to someone in the matching region; unredeemed codes travel well.

Can I change my account region to match a cheaper card?

Are region-locked cards cheaper?
Often, yes — cards priced for markets like Turkey, Argentina or India can cost less in USD terms. They are only a deal if your account genuinely belongs to that region.
How do I know which region a code is before buying?
A trustworthy store prints it on the product page. If a listing does not name the region, treat that as a red flag and shop somewhere that does.
Do game top-ups have region locks too?
